Eagle Point Project - 2009/2010

Chehalis River Estuary

I'm expecting a couple of propane powered generators to be delivered to my doorstep literally any time. They were supposed to be here yesterday.

I have a single set of NiCad industrial batteries in my backyard and there are about 90 more of them at David's compound in South Surrey. These are used but in great condition - been in the BC forest for the past 20+ years but they've been well looked after. All together there are about 1000 Ampere-Hours of battery at 12 volts; a massive amount - but we're going to need it.

You see we're planning on putting at least 2 cameras, possibly more, about 1.5Km from shore, out on the Chehalis flats where the Chehalis river runs into the Harrison. Last year David counted over 2500 eagles there one day - and they'll be there again this coming spawning season, feasting on the salmon carcasses that float down from the spawaning beds upstream.

The cameras will have to be run from the batteries, along with the wireless link to the shore. About once per week we'll remotely start up a generator to re-charge them. We tried to put together a solar-power solution 2 years ago but it turns out there simply is not enough sunlight in the late Fall and Winter to make that a viable alternative.

We're looking for some help in putting together this project. We already have commitments for a helicopter, an 8' high platform to put the equipment on, and some muscle to help build things on site - but we'll need some other things too. We'll be posting adendums to this story with lists of things we're looking for as well as other help we need - but of course you can already help simply by donating.

One thing that would help is a new set of boxes like the ones pictured - but for 5 cells each. If you're somewhere in the Vancouver area and handy with woodworking please contact me and I'll get you the dimensions and maybe a sample. The current boxes are mostly for 6 or 7 cells and we're doing multiples of 5 so need to at least get a few made.

Bear season begins

April 15, 2009 3:23 PM  North shore BC

Hibernating North Shore black bears are slowly awakening, and they’re hungry.

The North Shore Black Bear Network has issued its annual reminder to locals to manage attractants – smelly garbage, dirty diapers, bird feeders, fruit trees, etc. – so bears don’t become habituated to human food in these parts.

Fed bears almost always become dead bears, and some will leave behind cubs.

That sobering reminder was underlined last week when the provincial government announced a $400,000 grant to create a 32-hectare refuge for orphaned bear cubs in North Vancouver on Fromme Mountain.

Bear advocate calls for bear-proof bins

Local bear advocate Tony Webb is urging the districts of North Vancouver and West Vancouver to follow the lead of other Metro municipalities by making new bear-proof bins available to residents.

“Approximately 80 per cent of bear situations on the North Shore are a result of mismanaged garbage,” said Webb. “Obviously if we could solve that it would be great.”

Webb is talking specifically about the 120-litre Rollins Schaefer bin, a two-wheeled, hard-plastic garbage can outfitted with heavy duty clasps and steel around the lid.

The bear-proof garbage bins have recently been issued to all residents in Port Moody. Coquitlam, meanwhile, has made the bins available to its residents at a cost of $140 per bin after receiving positive results from a study in 2007 involving citizens and a hauling contractor.

Stewart says no bear hunting

Albums - Pictures + Stories

JUNE 17 2009

Terrace BC

A “No Bear Hunting” area is being proposed along the 60 km stretch of Highway 37A between Meziadin Junction to Stewart and Hyder, which would ban hunting of the animal from mountain top to mountain top along the Bear Pass.

The Stewart Municipal Council passed the motion at its meeting June 8 in recognition of the animal being a large part of its tourism draw.

“It was just kind of something that council has been talking about for a while,” said District of Stewart Mayor Angela Brand Danuser. “We rely so much on tourism, and tourism is our bears.”

Baby beluga born at Vancouver Aquarium

Albums - Pictures + Stories

June 7, 2009 | 5:37 PM PT

Aurora, the 20-year-old beluga grandmother at Vancouver Aquarium, gave birth to a calf Sunday afternoon.

Staff called it a thrilling event for the aquarium and although they couldn't conclusively comment on the calf's gender, they said it appears to be a female.

Visitors and volunteers gathered around the beluga habitat to watch the birth and, after a few false starts, the baby emerged to cheers from the crowd.

Sharon Newman has been haunting the aquarium since Aurora was put under 24-hour surveillance to monitor her condition.

Canada geese put one over on American eagle

Albums - Pictures + Stories

Sunday, April 19, 2009

BEAVER DAM, Miss. -- With mating season in full swing for Canada geese, people have no doubt seen the tall, majestic-looking birds nesting on the ground all over the Mid-South.

But Mike Boyd can show you something you probably haven't seen when it comes to geese.

On the edge of his property at historic Beaver Dam Lake, just outside of Tunica, Boyd can point to a pair of Canada geese sitting in an eagle's nest more than 80 feet off the ground.

The geese didn't wait for the eagles to leave and then claim an abandoned nest. They actually fought off the eagles and have forcefully occupied their home for two weeks despite their constant protests.

JAMES RIVER JOURNAL By Rex Springston

Published: March 16, 2009

CHARLES CITY On a cold morning before dawn, Libby Mojica worked by headlamp to wire up explosives in a farm field. If all went well, the explosives would launch three rockets to carry a 60-foot net over a bald eagle.

Biologists Mojica, 31, and Bryan Watts, 48, are trapping and studying eagles along the James River, which runs beside the field at Weyanoke Point in Charles City County.

The research should help experts help the majestic birds, perhaps by pointing out territories in need of protection. READ REST OF STORY HERE

Norfolk's eagle babies get their braclets

Albums - Pictures + Stories
Wednesday, May 27, 2009

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Scientists have attached a satellite tracker to a baby bald eagle nesting at Norfolk Botanical Garden.

The female bird now has a 2.5-ounce backpack transmitter that will allow College of William & Mary scientists to follow her for three years and learn about eagle roosting and migration as well as eagle ecology around the Chesapeake Bay.

The college's Center for Conservation Biology already is following 65 transmitter-outfitted eagles in the upper bay area; the eagle outfitted Wednesday is the first in the southeast Virginia area.

he babies in Norfolk's famous bald eagle family got their braclets this morning - identifying them for a lifetime.

Biologists took the three rapidly-growing eaglets from their nest at Norfolk Botanical Garden and put the silver-colored bands on each of the three youngsters After a quick photo, the three quickly were put back into their nest and attended to by mom and dad.
